What is this test?
The NT-proBNP test evaluates the blood level of the N-terminal fragment of the natriuretic peptide precursor, which increases when the heart walls are stretched. It is used as an aid in suspected heart failure (e.g., in a patient with shortness of breath) and in assessing its severity in the emergency department or cardiology.
